Our History Curriculum develops children’s knowledge of historical periods, events and significant individuals. Children learn key facts, knowledge and concepts alongside skills such as chronological understanding, how to analyse and evaluate historical evidence, how to empathise with people from different eras and how to compare and contrast life in different periods.
Timelines are important and used throughout the school – this ensures that children understand how times and events link. History subject areas are sequentially planned to enable children to get a good understanding of chronology. This is then shaped and extended through discussion and use of events learnt as they journey through the year.
The school uses its links with local history to give children experiences that deepen their knowledge and skills further. History planning ensures that children’s learning is extended and deepened by visits to local historical sites, handling artefacts and talking with visitors.
